I’ve hit day 10 of my 1000 word a day writing challenge, and I’ve hit a brick wall with my current short story. I’m 10,000 words in to what will probably turn out to be a 5000-ish word short story, and I’ve ran out of steam. Not with writing, just with this story in particular.

I’ve returned to it every evening for last ten days and spent an hour each day forcing myself to write. I’ve got all my ideas down, written roughly from start to finish, but I’ve just become numb to the whole story. I’ve had it suggested that I should put the story away for a couple of weeks and come back to it with a fresh pair of eyes, and this is probably the best thing to do, but I really want to finish something.

I like the story and the protagonist, and I think there are some compelling ideas, but I just can’t go over them one more time at the moment. So, I’m going to take a break from this one, and start another. Maybe in a few weeks I’ll come back to it, maybe I won’t, but with this first story of the year I’ve got further by pushing myself than I have with any writing before.

Looking on the positive side, I think this might be the feeling you get when you’ve finished a first draft.

See you tomorrow.
